Already? In June? Isn't this early?
Maybe it's a sign of an early or a harsh winter---but I've already got ripe blueberries. They usually don't ripen until late July or early August. When it is really hot and humid and you just about have to be insanely in love with blueberries to want to stand out in the heat and mosquitoes to pick them.
I went out a few minutes ago to see if they need to be watered (they do) and I found a handful of already ripe and ready to pick blueberries. The few I ate were sweet, Chris ate one and he said it was sour. There is evidence that a bird or two has already been out there enjoying the fruits of the Earth, too.
I'm ready, the freezer is empty after not having a single blueberry last year. Chris needs to eat more ice cream, I have a feeling we don't have enough ice cream buckets.

Blueberries aren't cheap here, either. I walk into the grocery store thinking of the gallons of blueberries on my bushes that need to be picked and about have a heart attack when I see the little bitty plastic clam shell things full of blueberries selling for about $4.00 (US) I've told plenty of people at the store---don't buy those, come to my house and pick all you want for free. We're sick of picking them and there's another 10 gallons or more sitting on the bushes.
I can't believe no one has taken me up on the offer.
This year, if we get our fill of them, I am going to put a sign up at the highway: You pick 'em blueberries--$1.00 a gallon. I don't want to get rich, but people don't seem to like 'taking' things for free---even if offered.
That's about what they cost here too. Wish I was close enough to you to send my kids over berry picking. Have you thought of putting a notice on freecycle?
Blueberries are so expensive. I either have to get them frozen,(less expensive) or wait for a sale. I used to love to go berry picking as a kid with my family. We didnt have blueberries though, only raspberries and blackberries.
Nice Photo.
